Carrier impersonation means criminals register fake trucking companies, sometimes copying real ones, then show up with forged U.S. Department of Transportation numbers and fraudulent digital shipping documents to pick up freight that was never meant for them.
In one widely reported case, 24,000 bottles of celebrity tequila were stolen. The criminals not only broke into shipping systems but also faked the truck's GPS signal so tracking dashboards showed the load travelling normally to its correct destination. It was not.
Another case involved a car transporter carrying Shaquille O'Neal's Range Rover. Coordinating that kind of targeted theft required inside knowledge, compromised systems, and real logistics infrastructure to move the vehicle afterward.
That last point matters. Unlike a data breach, where stolen information can be sold invisibly online, cargo theft requires criminals to operate real trucks, clear real customs checkpoints, and ship physical goods overseas. These are organised operations, not lone opportunists.

Yes, in a few practical ways. If you are expecting a delivery and it disappears or arrives late with no explanation, a freight diversion could be the cause.
