Dario Amodei, chief executive of AI company Anthropic, has put a specific and uncomfortable timeline on a scenario most of his industry prefers to treat as distant. Reported by SecurityWeek, he said AI could, within six to twelve months, be capable of leading a "swarm of agents" (many AI programs running in parallel and taking automated actions) to seize control of the entire internet.

That's not a small claim.

What would that actually mean?

A coordinated swarm of AI agents taking over internet infrastructure would mean automated systems compromising routers, servers, and the core systems that route global web traffic, without meaningful human oversight. Think thousands of digital burglars working simultaneously, each learning from the others in real time.

Amodei's concern is the gap between what AI can do and what safety controls currently prevent. His argument is that the industry needs to give safety research time to catch up before capabilities outrun the guardrails entirely.

The uncomfortable part: Amodei leads a frontier AI lab that builds and sells Claude, one of the most capable AI systems available to businesses and consumers today. He's warning about a risk category that includes his own products.
